Sampler

Map sampler showing a map of England and Wales worked in coloured silks on satin ground.

Map samplers were produced in their thousands in the late 1700s and early 1800s, combining the dual purpose of a geography lesson and sewing practice.

SILK, embroidered with coloured silks in satin, back and stem stitches and bullion and French knots. A map of England and Wales, with the coastline and counties outlined in chenille' In the top right hand corner is the figure of Britannia and the inscription: “A MAP of ENGLAND & WALES." In the bottom left hand corner there is a north point. There is a border of roses. About 1800. From Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire. (Source: Guide to the Collection of Samplers & Embroideries (Cardiff: National Museum of Wales, 1939) by F.G. Payne).
