A type of clogmaker's knife known as a gripper or a mortising knife. It's slim V shaped blade was used to cut a channel all around the top of the sole, into which the leather upper would be fitted later. At one end is the handle and at the other a hook which was attached to a ring on a wooden bench. The clogger grasped the handle with one hand while holding the wooden billet against the bench with the other. The cutting blade is on a gripper bit fitted into the gripper beam at a right angle.
