Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe
Blade end fragment of a small to medium sized three-ribbed socketed axe. On one face, the ribs appear slightly convergent, whilst on the other they are parallel. The break across the middle section appears to have been made by impact to one of the sides of the axe, now slightly bent. The axe has slightly divergent sides with modest outsplaying at the blade end. The axe body section is rectangular with angular face edges. The base of the socket is even. Whilst side casting flashes are visible, they appear to have been worked down. Feint striations down one side of the axe and parallel to the flash suggest grinding. Blade bevel margins have hammer marks, whilst striations parallel to the cutting edge indicate grinding to sharpen the blade edge. The blade edge has modest curvature. The axe has a grey green patina.

Site Name: Glascoed, Monmouthshire
Notes: Discovered on a playing field near Glascoed, Llanbadoc Community by Mr Smith whilst metal detecting. All finds except 2007.43H/7 & /16 were found at depths of between 10-30cms. The other two finds were found in the detector pit on a subsequent visit to the site.
