A sample of dark earth from a Bronze Age tumulus.
A sample of dark earth recovered from the middle chamber of a Bronze Age tumulus at Morfa Bychan near Pendine, Carmarthenshire. The middle chamber is described by Ward (1918: 69) as being 'irregularly pentagonal' in plan and measures 4'6" (137.16 cm) long and 3'7" (109.22 cm) wide with depths ranging from 2'10" (86.36 cm) to 5' (152 cm). The chamber had apparently been disturbed by human activity prior to the excavations in 1910.
