Sugar bowl, black basalt, oblong form with rounded slightly spreading foot-rim, gently curving sides sloping inwards at the shoulder, straight-sided neck, to either end of the body twin angular loop handles with terminals moulded in the form of Greek key-shapes, oblong domed cover, to the top a finial modelled in the form of a Greek key-shape, the exterior of the sugar bowl and the top of the cover moulded all over with a vermicelli ground against which is reserved to either side of the body of the sugar bowl a raised applied scallop shell, one scallop shell moulded with a design composed of a collection of symbolic elements including a crocodile and pyramid, a large towered building, and in the centre a group of military trophies including a cannon, a shield, and a flag with above the inscription "TRAFALGAR" impressed on a scrolling banner, the other shell moulded with a classical design showing to one side a winged female figure writing on a shield which is already impressed with the inscription "NELSON", to the other side the figure of Britannia with trident, plumed helmet and shield, and in the centre a plinth on which is impressed the inscription "PRO PATRIA", the exterior of the neck moulded with a raised pattern of Greek key-shapes; left in the black, the interior of the sugar bowl glazed. The base cracked and repaired.
