Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Wedding outfit worn by Miss Mary Jones on her wedding to David Davies of Carlisle Street, Cardiff, on 29 September 1891. Before her marriage, Miss Jones, originally from Ammanford, worked as a dressmaker at J. Howell & Co, one of the largest department stores in Wales. The dress was made for her by her colleagues. Skilled workers with a regular income, such as Miss Jones, could save small amounts of their salaries to purchase clothing for special occasions.
Bodice and skirt of grey wool. Trimmed with slate grey ribbed silk and cord. High collar and plastron front of silk. Twenty-four fancy pearl buttons fasten the bodice front. Leg of mutton sleeves. Skirt straight in front and pleated at back.
