Find Information

Site Name: Goldcliff Pill, Newport County Borough

Date: 1878

Notes: Found washed out from below ground deposited by the tide in front of the long sea-bank about 400 yards west of Goldcliff Priory, Mon., about 3 miles south of Caerleon. The stone was designed for insertion in an earthwork, but any relationship with any Roman sea defences is uncertain. It could have been associated with Roman drainage works associated with the modern-day Goldcliff Pill or an embankment adjacent to it.
