S.S. AFON MORLAIS, negative
Starboard broadside view of S.S. AFON MORLAIS.
The 965 gross ton steam coaster Afon Morlais approaching Cardiff with a deck cargo of timber, c. 1949. This vessel was built at Bowling in 1944 as Empire Marksman and was sold to William Coombs & Sons Ltd. of Llanelli in 1948 who re-named her in line with their practice of naming their ships after Welsh rivers. Sold to John S. Monks of Liverpool in 1956, she was eventually cut up at Dublin in 1958.

Built 1944 as EMPIRE MARKSMAN by Scott & Sons. Bowlin, West Dumbartonshire, for MoWT. 1948 – Sold to Afon Lliedi Steamship Co., and renamed AFON MORLAIS, managed by William Coombs & Son., Llanelli. 1956 – Sold to John S. Monks Ltd., Liverpool and renamed CLIFFVILLE. In May 1958, she sprang a leak and sank at Meadowside Wharf, Glasgow. Although refloated and put into dry dock in the July, she was declared a total loss, and towed to Dublin to be broken up.
