Taffs Well Police station

Taff’s Well Police Station was built in 1894 for the Glamorgan County Constabulary. It provided accommodation for the Station Sergeant and his family, and the Constables based there. Taff’s Well was a thriving railway junction at this time as coal was transported from the South Wales Valleys to the busy port of Cardiff before being shipped around the world.

The exterior of the building is rendered with a coarse river-sand render, with window and door reveals, corners and quoins highlighted in red brick. Caernarfon slates are used to cover the roofs with decorative clay tiles to the ridges. The walls are built of (solid) common brickwork, with Portland stone sills to the windows. The ground floor comprises a Charge Room and two cells for detainees (to the left of the centrally located front door), and the Sergeant's living quarters to the right. On the first floor there are three bedrooms and a bathroom for the Sergeant's family. A fourth, large bedroom, was shared by three or four constables, and was reached by a second, separate, staircase.
