The Rest on the Flight to Egypt

BACICCIO, Giovanni Battista Gaulli, Il (Artist)

Following King Herod's order to kill all boy children aged two and under, the Holy Family fled from Bethlehem to Egypt. Here, Mary rests beneath a ruin with Christ in her arms. The broken statue is symbolic of the collapse of pagan gods at the coming of Christ. Gaulli, also called il Baciccio, worked in Rome, where his fame led to seven commissions for portraits of popes.
