The Communist, a political meeting
Evan Walters trained at Swansea School of Art. He came from a working class background in West Glamorgan coalfield. His work included industrial scenes, as well as landscapes, portraits and religious paintings inspired by the Welsh Nonconformist tradition. In this work of around 1932 the Christ-like posture of the orator is ambivalent, and his audience is muted, rather than inspired by his passion. Walters's career faltered in the 1930s and there was little interest in his industrial imagery in his lifetime. He is remembered today for his advocacy of a Welsh art that expressed the ideals and soul of Wales.
