Bryn-celli-ddu pattern stone

Decoration of incised spiral and sinuous ornament on both faces, sides and top, which appear to have been made by "pecking" with a pointed tool.

This stone was found in a Neolithic passage tomb near Menai Bridge. The sandstone was decorated by striking with a tool. The builders of the tomb deliberately hid it from view. Carving it and placing it there was more important to them than being able to see it. It may have been moved from an earlier tomb, or been a focus for ceremonies marking sacred spaces. 3500-3000 BCE.
