Bronze Age bronze socketed axe fragment
Dimensions: maximum surviving length 21.0mm; surviving width at mouth 23.5mm; thickness at mouth 5.6-6.8mm; upper face & side wall-thickness 3.3-3.5mm; surviving weight (prior to conservation) 7.2g.
This is a small, rectangular mouth-corner fragment of a bronze socketed axe which cannot now be identified to type. The break surfaces are soil covered and show some erosion, suggesting breakage in antiquity, rather than during recent discovery. The internal and external surfaces have a dark grey to black patina. On the mouth and along the break-edges there are areas of pale green corrosion product.
