Sampler

Williams, Sarah (Embroiderer)

Sarah Williams from Llangynidr made this sampler in 1833 when she was 14 years old.

Linen canvas embroidered in cross stitch in wool and flax (?) thread. Upper half has a flowering plant with crowns, vases of flowers, butterflies and birds arranged symmetrically on either side. Beneath is a verse, and the lower half contains a red brick house with a plant in a pot on one side and a woman on the other. At the bottom: Sarah Williams aged 14 years, 1833. Upper and lower edges are selvages; side edges have a small stitched turn back.
