Medieval copper alloy pax
In the form of a recessed panel with a crucifix and figure of St. John attached (the figure of St. Mary is now missing), diapered background in recess and crested top. Made from two sheets of copper alloy joined together with figures attached by rivets. The lower portion of the cross from the central figure is missing, as is its left hand rivet. The upper of the applied borders is missing leaving two rivet holes. One fleur-de-lys, part of the left hand and all of the right hand corner decoration are missing from the upper border.
The pax is an object kissed by worshippers in a Catholic mass. The bronzesmith who made it over 500 years ago joined cast figures and sheets of copper alloy with rivets and strips. The strips were engraved with religious text.
