Gold brocade canopy, 1720s. Lined with pink silk. From Tredegar House, Newport.
The groundweave of the fabric is cream ribbed silk with brocaded areas in cream silk, gold and silver thread. Design of brocade: most prominent feature are gold ribbons (up to 8cm wide and with scalloped edges and stylised floral decoration) which undulate vertically down the garment. In between are blossoms of gold and silver thread and foliage picked out in cream floss silk. The same fabric was used to make jacket 23.189.16.
