Rag doll

Rag doll, bought from a street hawker for a penny, London, 1910

Cloth doll. Small stuffed figure with no arms or legs. The head is made of pink material with faceted black glass bead eyes and stitched nose and mouth. The body is a stuffed tube of roughly sewn coarse white cotton. Wearing a dark red satin skirt: red silk warps visible on front and cotton wefts visible on reverse/inside of skirt. The hem of the skirt is trimmed with a red silk ribbon. The bodice is a printed cotton fabric with yellow pattern on red background. There is a white lace tunic covering the upper torso to half-way down the skirt. Sky blue tabby woven fichu and a fine ruffled collar made from cream gauze. Gold 'necklace' made from metal thread wrapped around a yellow cotton core. An elaborate head dress of fine gauze and lace topped with a sky blue bow (same material as fichu). The pink material of the face is twill-woven with a raised nap.
