Wooden costume doll from Palestine circa 1900
Wooden doll. Bound sticks form the body and splayed legs. The head is a wooden disc with penciled features and a plait of real hair tied with a black ribbon. Stuffed arms. Wearing very baggy trousers of bright magenta gauze with red paisley lining and gusset under a white cotton broderie anglaise skirt, the whole covered by a long slit-sided robe of thick black cotton leaf patterned in red and gold, and a long sleeved padded cotton jacket with blue flower pattern and a black v-neck trim. Striped silk sash knotted at the waist. Blue gauze veil bound round head and a necklace of beads and five coins/amulets.
