Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Sampler made in 1883 by 10 year old Margaret H. Evans at Park Board School, Trecynon, 1883.
Wool cross stitch on cotton canvas ground fabric. The wool appears to have been dyed in such a way that it changes from dark red to red, then orange to yellow and back again. Upper edge is a selvage. Side and lower edges are turned up by 5mm and finished by herringbone stitches using the same wool as the main embroidery. The herringbone stitches area also stitched along the selvage edge. Each row of inscription is separated by a line of stitches. No decorative motifs.
