Smock frock in unbleached linen embroidered with linen thread. From the Monmouth area, about 1860-80.
Front and back smocked in nave outline and cable. Front smocking panel has been repaired at later date. Small area gathered at top of sleeves (smocking stitches have rotted). Sleeves at cuff smocked to match front panel. Two mother-of-pearl buttons fastening each cuff. Ccuff edge decorated with row of herringbone stitch to match row at edge of plain collar flaps. Curved hem has been taken up at some time to form shorter garment with flat hem.
