Windsor comb-back chair of oak and ash, late 1700s. It has fourteen rails in the back, eight of them reaching the straight crest rail. The semi-circular seat has the legs wedged into it.
This stick chair is known as a comb-back, which relates to the upper section of the chair. The seat was possibly the starting point for this chair as it is such a thick block with a knot in the centre – the stong part of a piece of wood. It has been chamfered or shaved on the sides to appear thinner and therefore more delicate. Lapped joint. Rake.
