David Thomas was the son of a Merthyr shopkeeper turned coal entrepreneur. He inherited a share in his family’s Cambrian Collieries in Clydach Vale, but pursued a political career as Liberal MP for Merthyr until 1910. Returning to business, he controlled a dozen colliery undertakings by 1916 with an output of 52 million tons.
