'British Press Pictures of the Year' medal. Awarded to Melville Parry of the Merthyr Express for his photograph of Merthyr policeman Vic James saving Susan Maybank during the Aberfan diaster 1966. Aberfan was Mr Parry's first assigment as a press photographer, he was eighteen years old. He was living in Mount Pleasant, Merthyr Vale at the time and was the first photographer to reach the disaster area even though he wasn't supposed to be working that day. Among the dead were two young girls, his cousins.
