Coracle

John, Irlwyn (Coracle maker)

Keel-less vessel; oblong with square front tapering towards rear; basketwork construction with 7 longitudinal sawn ash laths and 7 cross laths; 3 short strengthening laths in front compartment, 1 in rear; ends of laths pointed and inserted into gunwale; front section of gunwale formed of squared apple wood, rear of elm; planked elm seat fixed flush to gunwale, supported by 5 broad softwood strips nailed to basal bar and fixed to cleat screwed into seat; seat supported by narrow wooden strips along gunwale; frame covered with calico waterproofed with a mixture of pitch and tar; leather carrying strap passing through slots in seat and held with wooden peg on one side and zinc nail on other.
