WILSON, Richard (1714-1782
Richard Wilson, originally from Montgomeryshire, is often called ‘the Father of British landscapes’ for the key role he played in the development of the tradition, though he initially trained as a portrait painter. He became the first major artist to popularize images of Wales that went beyond topographical accuracy.

Edward Lloyd of Pengwern (c.1710-95) was created a baronet in 1778. He was much admired by contemporaries for his planting of 442,000 trees, mostly oaks, in his Flintshire and Caernarvonshire estates. The relaxed, informal pose, appropriate to a country gentleman, is characteristic of Wilson's approach to portraiture.
