Sampler

Small embroidered sampler made on a wool ground using coloured silk threads. The sampler depicts and Acrostic poem for the makers sister and is a memorial piece. The verse is made in tiny straight stitches (brown thread) and is surrounded by a border of strawberries done in cross-stitch (2 greens, white and pink). The inscription reads: “An Acrostic / On My Late Dear Sister / Jane Emery Day / died Sepr 14. 1792”. Below, there is a horizontal wavy stem with strawberries, beneath which:

“Jealous of Self. deeply possess'd. And rested twas within her breast No allowed sin in her was seen Early forsook bane paths of sin.

Earnestly She enquired th' way to God Marked well She did. each step She trod Eager pursued it through CHRISTs Blood Righteousness divine She gloried in Yea Confessed herself nought but sin.

Dearly highly favoured Youth thou Ascended art to JESUS now Yields Him the Crown eternal through.”

At the bottom are the initials "T.B.". There is a border of a wavy stem with strawberries.

The edges of the ground have been cut and the object has been sewn to a piece of silk and part of the embroidery has been re-done mainly the right edge.
