Hollow, cast iron cylinder with a serpentine-form support on a circular moulded base.
Rolls of delicate frills and lace, which were used as decoration on caps, aprons, night-gowns and underskirts, required special treatment with goffering irons. A red hot piece of iron like a poker was inserted into the hollow tube which was fixed on an iron stand. The moist starched fabric would be grasped in both hands and pressed over the tube to obtain a semi-circular scallop of flute effect.
