The shepherd: return of the flock

COX, David (Artist)

Windswept clouds cast shadows over an exposed landscape as a shepherd stands with his back to the breeze, his flock stretching over the expanse ahead. The simplicity of this painting's composition reveals Cox's skill in expressing weather effects, light and atmosphere. Elements of his style demonstrate the impact of the great landscapists Constable and Turner, in whose footsteps he followed.
