Green glazed candlestick, Claypits Pottery, Ewenny, 1910. Made for Rev. J.H. Crosby, then a master of Cowbridge School.
This is the work of a potter at Ewenny in the Vale of Glamorgan. Ewenny has a long tradition of making pottery. All the materials were at hand - red clay, glaze materials to finish the wares, stone to build the kilns and coal to fire the pots. There have been 15 potteries in the area at one time or another. Now there are only two.
Slightly tapering, ribbed shaft; good mottled green glaze, streaked with darker green; sgraffito decoration around base.
