Cup and saucer

Hannong period, Frankenthal

Cup, hard-paste porcelain, standing on a short cylindrical foot-rim, slightly bulbous rounded sides with slightly flaring lip-rim, double curved handle with foliate moulding at the shoulder; finely painted in polychrome enamels with to the front of the cup a classical landscape with a figure seated beneath a tree and gazing across a river at a group of ancient ruins, the scene bordered below by a pattern of rococo scrolls in gilt, scattered sprigs of naturalistic flowers around the rest of the exterior sides of the cup, a gilt band around the foot-rim, a dotted gilt border to the lip-rim, the handle picked out in gilt. The handle broken and repaired. Saucer, hard-paste porcelain, standing on a short cylindrical foot-rim, rounded curving sides with slightly spreading rim; finely painted in polychrome enamels with to the centre of the well a classical landscape with a figure seated on a rock and gazing across a river at a many towered building, the scene bordered below by a pattern of rococo scrolls in gilt, scattered sprigs of naturalistic flowers around the sides of the well, a dotted gilt edge to the rim.
