Quilt

Edwards, Miss Jessie M. (Quilter)

Wholecloth quilt. Cream coloured poplin. Centre has a large diamond-shaped panel filled with spiral and leaf designs, bordered with spiral pattern. Made from three lengths of tabby woven synthetic fabric on the front and three lengths on the back. The pieces are machine-stitched together. Contains wool wadding. Hand quilted.

Jessie Edwards, born in 1894, was a well-known quilter in Porth and Merthyr Tydfil. She taught quilting classes for many years. She was an outstanding quilter and won several competitions during her career. This cream poplin quilt won a prize at a quilting exhibition held in the grounds of St Fagans Castle in 1951. The event was staged in conjunction with the Festival of Britain.

Jessie M. Edwards (1895-1961) was a well-known quilter in Porth and Merthyr Tydfil where she taught quilting classes for many years. In the 1930s, she tutored the Porth Quilters under the auspices of the Rural Industries Bureau.
