Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
These are well preserved remains (75%) from the inhumation burial of a younger middle adult (25-35 years) who was male.
The burial is from Phase F: 684-986 AD
He was buried in an extended supine position in a simple grave oriented West-East
His bones exhibited evidence of a healed fracture. His left ulna was fractured at the midshaft and healed. Ulna fractures most commonly occur when an object strikes the forearm, so these injuries can indicate combat, but could also be caused by a range of other things like falling objects or tripping. His radius bone was unaffected.
His bones also had signs of Degenerative Joint Disease, which is wear and tear often caused by repeated heavy labour.
His teeth showed extreme wear on all dentition, periodontal disease, caries and calculus. These all point to poor oral hygiene and a sugary carbohydrate heavy diet.
