Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
The brougham was the name given to a small, light vehicle built in 1839 for Lord Brougham, a former Lord Chancellor. It was based on his own ideas for something similar to a cab, mainly for informal occasions, but with improved comfort and visibility. Drawn by one horse, it was ideal for busy streets. The passenger compartment measured 4 feet in length with glass windows in the doors and also a glass front. This example was built by Barker and Co of Chandos Street, London, who included Charles Dickens amongst their customers. This carriage was built for use on the Penrice Castle Estate by owners Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot and his daughter and eventual heir Emily Charlotte Talbot in the latter half of the nineteenth century.
