Middle Bronze Age gold flange-twisted bar torc

This is large circular torc. The bar of gold has been hammered into ‘flanges’ and then twisted clockwise to create a ‘flange twisted’ form. The terminals of the bar are plain and circular-section and slightly expand towards a convex end creating a conical form. These were soldered onto the bar and are hooked around each other, completing the circle of the torc.

Project Title: Gold in Britain’s auriferous regions, 2450-800 BC: towards a coherent Research Framework and Strategy. Status: Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Network Grant funded project (2018-2019)
