Late Bronze Age bronze socketed axe

Small, plain socketed axe of leaded bronze with sub-rectangular mouth and socket, worn and broken away on one side. The mouth flares out slightly and is defined by a wide moulding with a faint, thinner second moulding below from which the narrow loop originates. The axe has a rectangular body section flaring out to an assymetrically worn cutting edge. There is a slight flash line down one side and any runner scars have been removed. The axe is best described as a South-Eastern type, the characteric form in south-eastern England during the Ewart Park period (Schmidt and Burgess 1981, 121) and is similar to the two axes from Margam beach hoard 88.49H. Information taken from report by Wear, S.L. (forthcoming).
