Trained at St. Martin's and the Slade School, Roberts exhibited with the Vorticists in 1915. In the First World War he served in the army as an official war artist. During the 1920s Roberts began painting narrative scenes of work and leisure peopled with bulky figures, reminiscent of those of Fernand Léger. He retained this figurative style for the rest of his life. This farming scene probably dates from the 1940s.
