SMITH, W. Eugene
American photojournalist. As a correspondent for Life magazine, he photographed American troops on the front-line at Saipan, Guam, Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the Second World War. From 1947 to 1954 he worked producing photo essays for Life. He joined the Magnum photoagency in 1955 and started his vast project to document Pittsburgh. Other photo essays by Smith include Nurse Midwife, Country Doctor, Minamata and Albert Schweitzer - A Man of Mercy.
