Mortarium (food-mixing bowl). Inscribed before firing. Mid-1st century A.D.
Roman pottery mortarium with a flange rim, a spout and grits on the internal surface. The external surface is not presented particular decoration, only a graffito that was cut before the bowl was fired. Translated, the inscription reads 'Mixing bowl for the barrack-room of Messor'. The presence of grits on the internal surface suggest that this typology of pottery was used for mixing or grinding ingredients of food, paints, make-up and ointments.
Site Name: Usk, Monmouthshire
Notes: fragments found in adjacent pits
