Tea towel

Morton, Alison (Weaver)

Tea towel handwoven by Alison Morton in bleached linen herringbone twill weave with plain weave borders, hemmed at each end. Olive green stripe in weft at top end finished with signature hanging loop in one corner. Olive green and light blue thin stripes in warp on each side. Alison Morton card label attached with safety pin ('53'' written on reverse in pencil).

<p>Rag-rug sample (looped/hooked) made with speed hook on 6x6 inch hessian backing, black frame with cream square and grey central diamond. Alison Morton tag tied to sample with hand drawn diagram and note ‘SPEED HOOK Worked from the back with a long strip of narrow rag’. AM notebook: ‘8th/9th October 1985. Made 2 more of Rag Rug – one with the long metal spike... The other sample was with the speed hook from Leicester – I stretched the hessian tight on wooden frame and cut the Rag narrower than for other samples and [?] through the eye. Very speedy and makes a lighter weight tight surface’.</p>

<p>Rag-rug sample (looped/hooked) made with metal hook on 6x6 inch hessian backing, black cotton border with light blue triangles and pink/blue patterned diamond in centre. Alison Morton label tied to sample with hand drawn diagram and note ‘METAL HOOK worked from the front – long lengths of Rag hooked through hessian’. AM notebook: ‘During winter 1984/85 Made 6" square samples using the different tools I have collected. 2 Tufted and 2 looped. Black border with different coloured triangles and centres’.</p>
