Medieval lead ampulla

The ampulla is near-complete, missing the mouth and side loops (with a surviving length of 56.0mm and a weight of 46.7g containing sediment). The neck is open and has straight parallel sides with an oval section (23mm wide and 9.3mm thick). Stubs from the side loops begin 2-3mm above the body and have a length of 13.2 - 14.0mm (3-4mm internal). The body has a maximum width of 40.0mm and a thickness of 9.8mm. The obverse face is convex and is decorated with the scallop motif, representing the emblem of pilgrimage, and has seven bold and curved ribs producing a corrugated effect, of Spencer (1990, p59) , Type I. The ribs are slightly wider at the base and narrow towards the neck, with the suggestion that they may continue and weaken along the neck. The reverse face is flat and plain with a bevelled edge. Casting flashes are evident along the sides and base of the ampulla.
