The monarch in plate armour, a plume of long ostrich feathers rising from his crown, his right hand holds his sword aloft, his left grasps a shield : 1 and 4. Quarterly, FRANCE (Modern) and ENGLAND; 2. SCOTLAND; 3. IRELAND. The head of the horse bears a plume of ostrich feathers, its neck is protected by plate armour, its trappings are finely embroidered including, at the rear, bear a shield (arms as before) encircled by the Garter with its motto and ensigned by a royal crown. The field is diapered elliptically, so that (Birch) ‘each ellipse contains one-fourth of the periphery of four other ellipses’. The larger spaces so formed contain alternately a rose, a fleur-de-lis and a thistle; the smaller spaces a minute fleur-de-lis.
