At the moment of casting, the type has a 'tang' (representing the metal between the aperture in the mould and the base of the type) but instead of being broken off by hand, as in hand-cast type, it is automatically cut off and returned to the reservoir of molten metal. These four examples are letters 'g' and have the 'tang' detached.
