Picture, woolwork

Woolwork picture with a cellulosic mesh ground, embroidered with coloured wools. Made using a commercially produced pattern. Embroidered motifs include the British, French and Turkish flags, roses and thistles.

The panel is made from a stiffened, cellulosic mesh ground, cut into a square shape with a selvedge on the bottom edge. The other edges are turned to the back and secured with a staggered running stitch using un-bleached linen thread. The cut edges are unfinished and are fraying. The embroidery is worked following a pattern which was drawn onto the ground in black ink. The yarn is wool 4 S plied (loosely twisted) entirely in cross stitch, working in a solid block across the ground with no gaps in between. The background colour is black with greens, pink, red, purple and brown for the floral border and white, red, blue, yellow. Pink and mauve for the flags.
