M.V. DERRYMORE (4799 gt). Built 1938 by Burntisland Shipbuilding Company Ltd., Burntisland and owned by McCowen & Gross Ltd., London. She was torpedoed and sunk, with the loss of 9 lives, while carrying ammunition under the command of an Australian captain, by a Japanese submarine 60 miles west of Batavia, (Jakarta) on the 13 February 1942. Australian minesweeper BALLARAT rescued 215 survivors including Flying Officer J. G. Gorton, RAAF, who was later to become Minister for the Navy, and Prime Minister of Australia.
