Banner

Banner designed by Thalia and Ian Campbell depicting scenes from the Greenham Common peace camp, early 1980s. Sewn by Jan Higgs. Four versions of this banner were made, with small details differing in each one.

"Sheila Owen Jones, academic from south Wales, said why don't you make a banner of everything that's happen in Greenham up till now, 1983. So Ian and I did it together and it's become iconic. It's been in the Imperial War Museum, it's been in the V&A. But I never would've thought of doing it myself. Sheila suggested it... There are four of them actually... Well I used to go up and sit round the fire at Greenham, and I used to listen to what people were talking about and I used to go and stitch it – make it permanent, you know". Source: Oral history interview with Thalia Campbell conducted by Elen Phillips (19 December 2017).

Banner with design and lettering appliquéed onto dark green and pink synthetic fabric. The green fabric is in the centre with wide strips of pink above and below. Lettering is in yellow/gold capitals reading 'GREENHAM COMMON WOMENS PEACE CAMP'. The design shows a chain of people standing united in a circle. On either side of this is a white dove. There are several tents, one of which is of a teepee style with two interlaced female gender symbols. There is a caravan trailer, a bonfire, a wire-cutter, two tall and narrow trees and a yellow front loader truck which drives into one of the tents. There is also a large female gender symbol as well as a peace symbol. The appliqué uses a variety of different fabrics: synthetic, cotton and wool, as well as bundled lengths of yarn that are held in place with stitches. All are stitched on with machine-made zig-zag stitches using different colour thread. The side edges are bound in pink synthetic fabric which probably also served as a sleeve for the insertion of an upright pole. The bottom edge is trimmed with a narrow, looped green synthetic fringe with a chenille braid. The banner is 'signed' with stitched labels reading '©CAMPBELL DESIGN' and 'J E HIGGS' in the lower proper left corner. Blue tapes are stitched to the lower corners for stabilising the banner while it's being carried. Along the upper edge is a length of dark brown cotton webbing tape. There are six hanging loops made from translucent/white synthetic fabric; these are stitched on by hand using pink thread. The bottom edge of the banner is a selvage. Another selvage runs along the edge of the upper turn-back. The green fabric has horizontal selvage edges along top and bottom (full width of woven fabric is 114cm). The yellow/gold lettering appears to have a layer of iron-on membrane which can be seen poking out from some of the letters.
