straw hat, trimmed with black ostrich feather and blue&black hat band; edge of brim bound with black tabby woven tape; brim is lined with black silk satin; crown is lined with white (top) and black (sides) cotton sateen; there is a white interlining of coarse-weave stiffened fabric.
On the inside, at interface of brim and hat, a section of black velvet, lined with black coarse weave stiffened fabric has been stitched to the inside. The outside edges of the velvet have been bound with black cotton tape. The velvet fabric has a hole cut into the centre, the edges of which are unfinished. This was probably done to reduce the size of the hat to fit onto a smaller head. The hat is fastened to head by a black elastic band. The current elastic band is at least the 4th version: there is evidence of two further black bands and one white elastic bands stitched to the inside.
