The Jenkins vase

ROMAN/ITALIAN

The body of the vase is made from a round Roman altar first recorded at Pozzuoli, near Naples, in 1489. A drawing in the British Museum shows it before its transformation into a vase in the eighteenth century. The subject of the relief is the marriage of Paris, son of Priam of Troy, to Helen. Thomas Jenkins (1720-1798), a painter, banker and dealer in Classical antiquities based in Rome, probably bought this work in Naples in 1769.
