Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales
Lead stamp used for marking loaves of bread. The inscription is retrograde and in raised lettering, made by casting. The impression from the stamp reads:
QVINTINI AQVILAE
Translation: The century of Quintinius Aquila
Each century of 80 men, baked its own bread, in communal ovens outside the barrack blocks. These stamps would have shown who owned the bread when it came out of the oven. This object was found during excavations of the barracks at Caerleon in the 1920s.
