Capstan from East Dock Basin, c.1840

Crissell, H. & M.D. (Manufacturer)

Cast iron construction aotating about a wrought iron post (which would have been set in dock wall). There are twelve pockets around the top which accomodate 6 'bars' (every other pocket). There are five whelps around the main barrel. Four panles around the base kicked in by the foot prevent the capstan from running backwards. The cast iron body is painted black, the whelps are painted white. There are six reproduction bars that are left unpainted, but varnished.
