Medieval lead ampulla
The ampulla is fragmentary and distorted, represented a portion of the body and neck only (with a surviving length of 37.3mm and a weight of 18.6g containing sediment). The neck is distorted and the surviving face is folded back upon itself. The body has a maximum surviving width of 33.3mm and a thickness of 8.3mm. The obverse face was convex and is decorated with the scallop motif, representing the emblem of pilgrimage, and has four surviving bold and curved ribs, producing a corrugated effect, of Spencer (1990, p59), Type I. The ribs are wider at the base, narrowing towards the top. The reverse face is flat and plain. Remnants of casting flashes survive on the bottom edge.
